Ways you can clean rustic furniture without ruining it!

Rustic furniture can be a great way to start and furnish your apartment or give your apartment the signature look you're looking for. If you are trying to source your own rustic furniute this can be very hard as a lot of times you're finding this furniture in basements, old shops or yard sales. Now if you finding this old furniture you may want to either refinish this furniture or try and clean it up so you can have it in your new apartment. In this article I will go over how to clean this furniture.

Once you have now acquired your furniture and you get it home probably the first thing you want to do is to clean it. The best way to clean this delicate furniture is use soft towels with a mild detergent and try and use the least amount of water as possible. **Avoid getting standing water in the joints as this can cause your piece to swell and warp.**

  • Start with a soft microfiber cloth and run it over the surface to remove any loose dust that still may be on the surface of your project. You can also use a soft vacuum attachment to remove the loose dirt too.
  • Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and add 1 teaspoon of mild liquid soap. Dip a cloth or sponge into the bucket and wring it out. Wipe over the wood to remove any tough dirt or stains, rinsing the cloth or sponge in the bucket often.
  • Rinse the cloth or sponge with plain water and wring it out. Wipe over the wood surface to remove any soap residue.
  • Dry the wood thoroughly with a towel.

Now while this project is the most useful for unfinished surfaces if you want you can completedly sand down this project and refinish the project too. A good MinWax Matte Varnish will add superier protection against water and damages while keeping the rustic feel of your furniture. Once you have a heavier varnish on your project you can use more common household cleaners.
